This year marks the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a result of the 1953 Armistice Agreement following the Korean War, which began in 1950. During this time, the DMZ, reserved solely for army bases, has ironically become the most militarized of demilitarized zones. Due to restrictions on civilian entry, the DMZ is home to only animals and plants, aside from its military presence.

Presented as part of the REAL DMZ PROJECT, an initiative begun in Cheorwon, South Korea, in 2012, Negotiating Borders is an exhibition that contemplates the various phenomena brought about by the division of South Korea and North Korea through the lens of contemporary art. In addition to commemorating the DMZ’s sense of place, its history and the meaning of the divided nation, the exhibition also seeks to ponder the future of the DMZ. The artists participating in this exhibition approach the DMZ from diverse perspectives, ranging from political and historical themes to the lives of residents of the civilian control zones developed around the DMZ over the past 70 years and other phenomena that derive from Korea's North–South division, and attempt new explorations of the natural environment of the DMZ and its ecology as it has been built up throughout the last 70 years of national division.

The exhibition will be on view from October 13, 2023 to January 27, 2024 at the Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) and SAW in Ottawa. This iteration of Negotiating Borders will feature the work of 17 Korean and international artists and collectives, including a new work by Ottawa artist Adrian Göllner, commissioned by SAW for the project.

This exhibition is presented by the Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) and SAW as part of the REAL DMZ PROJECT and is funded by the Traveling Korean Arts Program of the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE).

올해는 1950년에 발발한 한국전쟁이 1953년의 정전협정(Armistice Agreement)으로 멈춰지고 비무장지대(Demilitarized Zone, DMZ)가 만들어진 지 70년이 되는 해이다. 그동안 DMZ는 군인들만이 주둔하는 장소로서 역설적이게도  가장 무장화된 무장지대가 되었다. 현재 DMZ에는 민간인 통제로 인해 군인을 제외하고는 동물과 식물만이 남아 있다.

2012년 철원에서 시작된 ‘리얼디엠지프로젝트(REAL DMZ PROJECT)’의 일환으로 개최되는 《경계협상 》은 남과 북의 분단으로 인해 만들어진 여러 가지 현상을 동시대 예술의 시각으로 고민하는 전시로, DMZ의 장소성과 역사, 분단의 의미를 환기하는 한편 미래의 DMZ에 대해서도 생각해 보고자 한다. 또한 참여작가들은 다양한 시선으로 DMZ에 접근하는데, 정치적, 역사적 내용부터, 70년간 DMZ 주변에 형성된 민간인 통제구역 주민들의 삶이나, 분단에서 비롯된 여러 현상까지도 살펴본다. 나아가 작가들은 70년의 분단에서 비롯된 DMZ의 자연환경과 생태를 새롭게 탐구하고자 시도한다.

이번 전시는 2023년 10월 13일부터 2024년 1월 27일까지 오타와의 주 캐나다 한국문화원과  SAW 에서 열린다. 이번 전시에서는 SAW가 커미션한 오타와 작가 아드리안 괼너의 신작을 포함하여 한국과 캐나다 작가 및 해외 예술가 17명의 작품을 선보일 예정이다.

리얼디엠지프로젝트의 일환으로 주캐나다 한국문화원과 SAW센터에서 전시되는 <경계협상>은 한국국제문화교류진흥원의 트레블링 코리안아츠 프로그램의 지원 아래 진행됩니다.
