SAW is pleased to present a public conversation between Jim Logan, a Métis artist based in Ottawa whose retrospective exhibition is currently on view at SAW, and Montréal-based video essayist Shawn Grenier.

Jim Logan and Shawn Grenier will discuss the role of art in confronting power, shaping historical memory and engaging with contemporary political realities. The conversation will offer audiences a unique opportunity to hear two compelling voices working across different mediums but united by a commitment
to critical cultural inquiry.

Jim Logan is an acclaimed Métis artist whose work has been a significant force in contemporary Indigenous art in Canada for more than four decades. Drawing from his experiences growing up in western and northern Canada, Logan creates powerful paintings that explore the realities of Indigenous life, including poverty, cultural displacement, colonialism, resilience and the complexities of reconciliation. In addition to his artistic practice, Logan has made important contributions as a curator, writer, advocate and arts administrator. Throughout his career, he has championed Indigenous artists and supported the development of Indigenous-led cultural initiatives across the country. Logan's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is featured in numerous publications on contemporary Indigenous art. In recognition of his contributions to Canadian art and culture, he received an Honorary Doctorate from OCAD University, becoming the first Métis visual artist to receive this distinction in the institution's history.

Joining him is Shawn Grenier, a video essayist whose work examines the intersections of art history and politics. Through an anarchist lens, Grenier analyzes both well-known and overlooked artworks, exploring their historical contexts, meanings and political implications for an audience of more than 500,000 subscribers. Their acclaimed video essays include What is Fascism? A Complete Guide and When Europeans Try to Make Anticolonial Movies.

The presentation will be in English.

The exhibition Requiems: Jim Logan will be exceptionally open until 10PM on July 2 after the conversation.

SAW is fully accessible, with barrier-free access throughout the venue and accessible washrooms for visitors.
