Open Call for Applications for a Residency Aimed at Indigenous Artists

In partnership with the Canadian Embassy in Paris and the Canadian Cultural Centre

Triangle-Astérides is a non-profit centre for contemporary art located in Marseilles (France) which has partnered with the Canadian Embassy in Paris and the Canadian Cultural Centre since 2021 for a yearly residence aimed at Indigenous artists living in Canada.

In 2022, Nadia Myre was the first laureate of the residency program, in collaboration with the non-profit Indigenous artist-run centre Daphne in Montreal. Nadia Myre is a renowned interdisciplinary artist and Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. Myre explores the politics of belonging by positioning it within a framework of Indigenous resistance and resilience.

In 2023, Mark Igloliorte was the second laureate of the residency program, in collaboration with the Aabijijiwan New Media Lab in Winnipeg. Mark Igloliorte is an artist, essayist and educator. His work investigates relating to indigenous futures through a grounding in the embodied practices and language.

In 2024, Triangle-Astérides, the Canadian Embassy in Paris and the Canadian Cultural Centre wish to collaborate with SAW in Ottawa.

The 2024 residency (September-November):

Apply now for a 10-week research residency (from Monday, September 16 to Monday, November 25, 2024) aimed at Indigenous artists living in Canada, in the emerging/mid-career stage of their practice, without age criteria. The opportunity is for artists working in the field of visual arts (all mediums are acceptable).

The program offers:

  • the outbound trip to Marseilles;
  • a 60 m2 studio at Triangle-Astérides (private; not shared);
  • curatorial support;
  • the organization of professional visits and networking opportunities;
  • an Open Studio event at the end of the residency (paid 150 euros on receipt of invoice);
  • a singleroom in a 90 m2 apartment with four bedrooms, shared with the other residents and/or guests of Triangle-Astérides (shared bathroom, kitchen and living room) in the city centre of Marseilles (inkind support estimated at 400 euros per room per month);
  • a global residency fee of 2500 euros on receipt of invoice.

Please send a portfolio or artistic file:

  • including images and texts that provide insight into the practice of the applicant. For artists working with video: please include links for online viewing (Vimeo or YouTube, for example) in the PDF application.
  • including a paragraph detailing your interest in the residency (optional).

Files must be sent to programming@saw-centre.com, in a single PDF file (less than 12 Mb).

Application Deadline: April 10, 2024.

Selection process:

The selection process is completed in two stages:

  • during the first stage all applications are read and considered carefully by the SAW team;
  • the second and final stage is a jury selection which takes place in April/May 2024. The jury is made up of SAW and Triangle-Astérides representatives.

All applicants will be notified at the end of May 2024.

About Triangle-Astérides

Triangle-Astérides is a centre for contemporary art of national interest based in Marseilles at La Friche la Belle de Mai, a cultural cooperative located in a former tobacco factory, since 1994. Triangle-Astérides articulates a rigorous program of exhibitions with research residencies for artists from international and French scenes outside Marseilles, Associate Artists from the local scene, to which are added events, editorial projects and a thorough outreach to all audiences.

Triangle-Astérides is part of international networks (notably the Triangle Network, which initiated the founding of Triangle-Astérides which remains a member while operating independently), as well as national and local networks (with the merger, in 2018, of Triangle France and Astérides). Connecting these different scales is at the heart of all its activities.

Mindful of each individual’s needs, Triangle-Astérides ensures, to the best of its ability, the accessibility of all its programs for the audience as well as for the invited artists (the building is accessible to persons with a disability; and upon request tours can be offered in French Sign Language and through audio description).

Triangle-Astérides’ communication elements are available in French and English (sometimes translated by professional translators, often translated into imperfect English by the team itself). Occasionally and upon request, our programs can also be translated into other languages.

Triangle-Astérides is a non-profit association supported by the Ministry of Culture - Drac Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, the City of Marseille, the South Region and the Bouches du Rhône Department. Its team is composed of four people; its board of five people including an artist.
