Presented as part of SAW’s exhibition Body Politics: Art, Protest and the State, this lecture by Montréal-based scholar Alice Ming Wai Jim examines the evolving relationship between artistic practice, political resistance and social transformation.

At a time when political crisis increasingly seems the norm rather than the exception, what can protest art still do? Beginning with the work of Ai Weiwei and moving across recent forms of artistic protest and resistance, the lecture considers the relationship between art, activism and political crisis, asking what protest art makes possible when political change itself seems increasingly difficult to achieve.

The lecture will be followed by a public discussion and Q&A. Body Politics: Art, Protest and the State will be on view, with gallery hours extended until 9PM.

This lecture will be presented in English.
